To Chinese, red bean soup is a famous dessert that is usually served warm and sweet. Originated from China, there are many variations in the world considering the ethics and geography. Yet, one of the variations that I had tried and never forget its secret ingredient is prepared with Milo – the unofficial national beverage in Malaysia! If you love Milo, I bet you are going to like this simple recipe too.

Sweet and Red are always auspicious to Chinese, believe to bring happiness and good luck!

This secret was unfolded during during the wake of my late grandfather in 2005. It happened that my family loved the sweet red bean soup served. We told the chef and complimented him for such a lovely dessert. He then revealed that a few spoonful of Milo was added that made up the creamy taste and fragrance of the soup. The presence of Milo also made the soup looks appealing with thicker texture.

Home Kitchen Recipe | Hainanese Chicken Rice

When I was small, the gals in my school loved to distribute around a piece of blank note book. Made from a hard cover ledger, it was nicely wrapped and decorated with a little note on the first page. So what was so great about it? This so-called memory book (if I recalled correctly) was then passed amongst the schoolmates before the school year ended to gather personal information and contacts to keep in touch. Too bad I lost all of my memory books (they must be somewhere though!) but what I remembered was the one of must-have content. We loved to list down our biodata that included ‘My Favorite Food’. And most of our friends would scribble ‘My mom’s cooking’. Haha..trust me, if you were like us whom lived in boarding school throughout the high school years, mommy’s cooking was the best of all!

The nostalgic years had passed yet the fact never change. Mom always makes the best meals for their kids. Recently, my mom cooked a popular Hainanese food – Hainanese Chicken Rice. Despite there are many variations compares to the commercial preparation, I guess I love her recipe the best. The chicken is juicy and the rice is fragrance. Simple and authentic.
