If you’d heard enough of the famous Perak Road Loh Mee, it’s time to check out where it is and how it tastes like. Formerly operated under the zinc roof, wooden house along the main road, this Tua Lor Au Loh Mee has moved into Joo Huat Restaurant – the corner kopitiam on the new commercial block, not too far from Perak Road wet market and Symphony Park apartments. Not many perhaps know that this popular vendor is Kim Leng’s Loh Mee.
Popular with the locals, Bukit Dumbar recreational park is a great place for brisk walking and jogging on its hilly tracks. Nestled against a small man-made hill not too far from Tesco Jelutong Hypermarket, this public park was built over an underground reservoir. To get there, one has to enter from Jalan Gelugor, after Jelutong post office or Jelutong wet market on a one-way traffic.
In Chinese tradition, Moon Cake Festival or Lantern Festival are synonyms for Mid Autumn Festival. Years back, I was way ignorance to wish a group of fellow friends “Happy Moon Cake Festival”. Then, a guy responded, quipped “It’s Mid Autumn Festival if we were to translate it from Zhōngqiū Jié”. Exactly, he is right. This harvest celebration is officially the Mid Autumn Festival because it falls in the autumn on the fifteenth day of eighth month in Lunar calendar, pretty closes to autumnal equinox! That’s the best lesson after all, the rightful manner to address this cultural celebration despite Moon Cake Festival or Lantern Festival have been used interchangeably for Mid Autumn Festival in most English literature!
As the name suggests, Penang Hokkien Mee is an iconic hawker food in the Pearl of The Orient or Pulau Pinang. Served in a bowl of prawn-shell rich broth, flavored with liberal servings of bean sprouts (taugeh), hard boiled egg, water spinach (kangkung), shredding pork and prawns with a garnishing of deep fried shallots, it is actually savory more than spicy despite its bright orange broth. The same dish is however known as Prawn Noodles in other states and Singapore.
If you are born and breed in Penang, Perak Road is a name that need no introduction. In spite of that, not many know where is Perak Road Wet Market unless you live in the neighborhood. Jalan Perak or Perak Road, being one longest road in George Town, is always tricky when it comes to guessing where about its wet market. A date with Mag finally gave me the answer.
Green Garden like the name suggests, is a haven for freshly prepared wholesome meals. Different from a typical vegetarian restaurant that serves plenty of ducks, chicken, fish alikes originated from beancurd skin and overwhelmed flavorings, this restaurant offers diners a peace of mind to enjoy brown rice, porridge, noodles and dishes prepared from authentic ingredients includes colorful range of vegetables, tofu, beans and lentils.
