Named after its former address, Alma Thirty Nine Kopitiam is tucked away in a strip of shop houses in Taman Alma (Damai) of Kampung Baru, Bukit Mertajam. Formerly, the Sou Mien business was operated opposite the current location at the house numbered 39 more than 5 years.

Popular among the locals, the newly open restaurant offers a better atmosphere equipped with air-conditional dining area, marble/wooden tables and chairs. Aside from the infrastructure upgrade, the menu has been revised with more choices that includes appetizers, snacks, desserts and assortment of drinks.
Sou Mien is available in two sizes; Big or Small
Instead of coffee, I went for red bean soup
Nevertheless, Sou Mien that is their signature dish still takes the center stage among the entrees. It remains as the main reason that patrons keep going back and again.
Steamed glutinious rice with rice and shiitake mushroom
Of Chinese origin, Sou Mien or literally translated as 'handmade noodle' at Alma 39 is served in a bowl of savory soup with shredded chicken, a slice of hard boiled egg, shiitake mushroom, bean sprouts, some chopped green onion and sprinkle of deep-fried shallots. Unless one does not fancy the odor of shrimp paste (belachan), the soup would taste better if the shrimp-paste ground chili is added and stirred into the soup. Fresh chopped cilantro on the other hand would help to neutralize the marine odor.
Chinese-style yam cake
Apart from their signature dish - Sou Mien, Alma 39 also serves other entrees namely chicken rice, barbecue pork rice, pork ribs noodle, duck noodle and Nasi Lemak. Kopitiam-style breakfast menu such as toasted bread, half boiled egg, yam cakes, chai kueh (steamed vegetable dumplings), loh mai kai (glutinous rice with chicken) and bao (steamed bun) with assorted fillings are also offered.

In short, Alma 39 had transformed from a plain Sou Mien stall to serving a good array of Malaysian-favorite breakfast/lunch. The price of Sou Mien is slightly higher compares to previous location. Yet it is still reasonable taking into account the atmosphere, service and food quality.
