Also popular by the name like Chital or Cheetal deer or Spotted deer, owing to the white spots found on their body. The white spot grown on adult Axis deers are brighter and more compare to their fawns (young ones).

The adult stags (male deers) will have antlers and they will shed every year. During the shedding period, the male deers will leave the herd and return with newly grown antlers. Mating period is throughout the whole but highly recorded in winter especially in northern India. After a gestation period of 7 to 8 months, the female deer will give birth to the fawn. The fawn (young deer) usually hide during the day until their mother returns to feed them.

Axis deers are usually seen to roam for food after sunrise and seek for water, then rest in the mid afternoon to stay away from heat. Before dusk, they will feed again and then return to their herds. Their primary diet includes leaves, grass, fallen flowers and fruits. They also eat the shed antler as a source of nutrients.
