Back in my home country Malaysia, 'Nasi Kandar' is one of my Significant Other's favorite hang out place. Either breakfast or dinner, I think we frequented these restaurants at least once a month. 'Nasi Kandar' is a two-word in Malay that is called upon a popular cuisine in Northern Malaysia. 'Nasi' means 'rice' whilst 'Kandar' is a verb which literally translated as 'balancing on shoulder'.
In the old days, this dish was sold by street vendors. Their operation was run by balancing a pole on shoulder with two huge rice meals containers. This is version which I heard from my parents since I have never seen that with my own eyes. I guess this dish gains popularity as time passed and as early as 1990s, 'Nasi Kandar' chain restaurants was mushrooming in Malaysia. Typically, 'Nasi Kandar' refers to a platter of plain/spiced rice with cooked dishes like curry chicken, fish, squibs, shrimps. Everything are placed on a plate and typically is poured with mixture of curry sauces or gravy which gives the platter an irresistible aroma. And of course, they are delicious!
I dare not think that Austin has a 'Nasi Kandar' restaurant. If we were wishing to dine at a decent 'Nasi Kandar', I guess we would have to wait till the cows to come home! But where is the will, there is a way!
The closest similarity of 'Nasi Kandar' is Indian cuisine. My Significant Other insisted we have to dine at Masala Wok last weekend to satisfy his cravings. He has been there a couple of times and love the dishes.
Check out what were on our table. For drinks, we opted fro Mango Lassi. Wow..it was perfect! This is one of the best mango lassi I have ever tasted.
My Significant Other opted for Coconut Curry. The chicken is tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves, then cooked in coconut curry sauce. The gravy is fabulous!
I opted for Korma Masala Lamb. It is cooked with mixed vegetable in korma sauce and served with rice plus nan on a platter.
This 'Blazing Masala Noodles' is a hot and spicy noodles with Masala Wok's signature sauce. It is fried with chopped vegetables and chicken.

In short, I like this place. Although it is sort of self-service style (since we have to go to counter, order and paid there - so no tipping), but the host-staff is very friendly as she would make round and ask for feedback. Furthermore, there are 3 rating of hot/spicy index: mild, medium or extreme which is a good means to accommodate folks of low tolerance of hot stuff.
Besides the traditional Indian cuisine, Masala Wok menu also features a couple of noodle bowls namely chow mein and chop suey. And another plus, most entrees are also available in vegetarian as well.
The food here is excellent and it fulfills our 'nasi kandar' cravings in Austin!
