Have you ever request rice in the unit of pieces or more accurately in the count of balls? It may sound a bit impolite but this is what happens in Melaka. When in Rome do as what the Romans do. When in Melaka, we ask exactly for what the Malaccan serves!
On my recent trip to Melaka (Malacca) – a well known historic city in Malaysia which was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage City on 7 July 2008, we decided not to miss the Melaka famous food – Hainanese Chicken Rice Balls at Chung Wah Coffee Shop for lunch. The core business of this open air coffee shop is chicken rice and the customers were coming non-stop. As we arrived at 11:30am, all the marble top tables were fully occupied.
Chop Chung Wah owns a simple and clean facade with only one entrance into the coffee shop. The signboard is placed high that you may not notice when you are too near. If you are walking from Dutch Square where the red buildings like Christ Church or Stadthuys are situated, keep look up on the right hand side of a white color building. Chung Wah is exactly on the right corner after crossing over Melaka River by Tan Kim Seng Bridge.

Standing at the entrance, you will notice a traditional Chinese name plate hanging high above an arch, describing the name of this shop usually implies it could be a family business run over generations.

At the beginning we were still indecisive whether to pick this shop or scout for another shop nearby. Luckily an angel told us that Chung Wah is the best shop to try. A few minutes later, we were invited to get seated as a table had been cleared for us. Seven of us on a table were just nice. We ordered for one and a half birds of Hainanese chicken together with 5 pieces of rice balls each! Only white rice balls are available here and it comes in 5 pieces on one plate. For drinks, we chose fruit juices of our favorite ranging from watermelon, pineapple, orange and mixed fruits.
Sitting nearby the table counter where the boss (I presumed) was preparing the chicken gave me the edge to find out more about their specialty. As I observed, these white chicks were stuffed with some herbal spices while steaming and when the bird was cut open, herbal/spices residual has to be removed before serving.
What we ordered finally arrived after 20 minutes. Served on 2 plates, the chicken were going away in pretty fast rate. The meats were smooth, juicy and tender. While the rice of a ping pong ball size was also appetizing. Simply lovely just to be eaten alone. All of us were happy and satisfied with the dish. We concluded that Chung Wah offers tastier flavor than another shop nearby we visited before.
