If fresh, juicy and inexpensive are what you’re expecting before buying imported fruits in Penang, then one of the must go places is Lorong Kulit Flea Market. Located next to Penang City Stadium at Jalan Datuk Kramat in George Town, this venue is the market place for pre-loved items ranging from collection of old coins, stamps, musical instruments to postcards and handicrafts. Yes, if you’re longing to walk down the memory lane, this is the place to be!
Hustling, bustling blending with rustic charm, this is the atmosphere as early as 8 or 9 AM. Parking can be a challenge at that time. However, as more stalls wrap up after lunch, Lorong Kulit is in fact a breeze spot to grab the imported at the best deals at the most affordable price. Besides, one may drive into the compound itself and park at one’s convenient right next to the fruit stalls.
From Spain’s pomegranate (they have the variety from Eqypt and China too), New Zealand’s kiwi, Korea’s persimmon to South Africa’s apple and lemon, there are aplenty of choices to pick. Switching by seasons, the selection of imported fruits can also be cherry, grapes, rock melon, plum, avocado, Dragon’s fruit to pears. So far, I can hardly come across a place in Penang that offers 7 pieces of fresh New Zealand kiwis for RM10. Even the best offer at the largest groceries chain isn’t going to give that kind of discount even though we are willing to purchase in bulk. Here at Lorong Kulit, even one is not purchasing in bulk, the price would be divided up to the piece of each.
Don’t be surprise to meet and greet the local fruits too such as mangosteen, rambutan, banana, papaya, guava, duku and langsat.
If you’re a big fan of fresh, juicy fruits be it imported or local, Lorong Kulit or Penang Flea Market is a great option to replenish your stock. Also, this is the chance giving back to our community by supporting the local small medium businesses.
