Tucked away in the row of shops situated at Main Road in Tanah Rata, we stumbled upon The Lord’s Cafe after a quick browse on where to go for the best scone in Cameron Highland. Medan is no doubt a city that is famed for its Medanese cuisine hence this post is a Medan food guide dedicated for the fellow foodies. Honestly, Medan food is underrated and lesser known to most part of the world compares to its neighbouring cities such as Penang or Bangkok. Deserving more attention than it gets, the famous Medan food is a blend of traditional ethnic foods and variety of geographical location.
1. Mie Pangsit or Mie Pansit Either Pansit or Pangsit, both refer to the same food that I would consider staple in this corner of the world. On the first day of my arrival, I was not sure of how to fuel up. A walk down from my hotel brought me to an eatery that was selling noodles. The look and feel was inviting, similar to the famous wanton mee in Penang.
If fresh, juicy and inexpensive are what you’re expecting before buying imported fruits in Penang, then one of the must go places is Lorong Kulit Flea Market. Located next to Penang City Stadium at Jalan Datuk Kramat in George Town, this venue is the market place for pre-loved items ranging from collection of old coins, stamps, musical instruments to postcards and handicrafts. Yes, if you’re longing to walk down the memory lane, this is the place to be!
Hustling, bustling blending with rustic charm, this is the atmosphere as early as 8 or 9 AM. Parking can be a challenge at that time. However, as more stalls wrap up after lunch, Lorong Kulit is in fact a breeze spot to grab the imported at the best deals at the most affordable price. Besides, one may drive into the compound itself and park at one’s convenient right next to the fruit stalls.
For travelers of north south highway in Peninsular Malaysia, one may opt to stop at Bidor, a ghost town that is located north of Tanjung Malim and south of Ipoh in the state of Perak. Compares to Ipoh, Bidor certainly offers the convenience as the town itself is merely 5 minutes away from the highway exit, in addition to the ease of traffic and plenty of spaces for parking.
If you are rather familiar with Bidor, Pun Chun eatery is one the famous stop among the outstation folks. High popularity resulted it to be over rated hence it operates more like a tourist spot that serves visitors less of its original value. Food prices are steeper than before or comparatively with other local operators down the road.
Aiming to find the authentic food of this ghost town, we stumbled upon Wind Town Restaurant that is located at Taman Bukit Bidor near Jalan Paku, just a stone throw from Pun Chun.
Two Sunday ago, we decided to visit Butterworth Chinese Methodist Church that is located off Jalan Ong Yi How. We arrived about 10 am, just in time before Sunday school for kids were about to begin. Our little one headed up to the children’s hall, he had a good time, playing the role of David then, Saul and a soldier, while the adults were attending Hokkien Sunday class. Refreshing, this was my first opportunity listening to the words of God in my mother tongue!
After fueling up our souls at Sunday service, we went along Jalan Raja Uda, looking for a hearty meal to warm up our tummy. Not up for hawker food, hence we landed at a decent vegetarian restaurant, Aik Choong. Some refer it as Aik Chong Vegetarian Restaurant though.
If you’re a coffee lover who is constantly searching for the best place to chill out with a cup of refreshing aromatic coffee in Penang, then 2F+ Coffee by Yellow House at Relau neighborhood is the next stop to look forward to. From the fine selection of Espresso to Mocha, Latte or Cappucino to Americano, 2F+ Cafe also highlights coffee by brewing methods such as (syphon) siphon coffee, hand drip coffee and French press over a range of coffee beans. Well, you might say this is too much of coffee geek, however nobody is ever too old to learn something new.
In the light of learning, I personally encounter a wall of wisdom after sitting down. Wise saying or beautiful quotes, we may have seen this before but staring at them in a warm, cozy restaurant truly get me to digest, allowing the wisdom of words to reach my heart and my mind. I found some messages that resonate with me (and I am not going to tell you!). Indeed, it makes one grow stronger and wiser!
Chinese is the ethnic that best known to eat all the time. Be it early in the morning before the sun takes a peek or late evening when moonlight takes the center stage, Chinese folks would greet you “Have you taken your meal?”

Have you ever heard of an XXXXL size Chinese steamed bun or bao?
If you live in Klang Valley, I bet you have heard of Cheras. Little that I know that Cheras offers an incredible super size steamed bun. Until one day, an old friend brought us a specialty food from the town of Cheras.
Thank you God for blessing us with good friends. And so, Mr Ong and family drove back this piece of gigantic steamed bun for us to savor. Stuffed with plenty of sliced pork, it also featured a hard boiled egg, chicken and mushroom. The filling is almost exactly typical like the big bao that I would consider as XL. Hence, this giant steamed bun is 3 times larger. Could you imagine that? Truly an experience, at which this super size bun was more than sufficient to feed 2 adults for dinner!
Seeing is believing, don’t miss out the pictures below 😉

The Best Braised Lamb Shank and Clam Chowder in Town
Not many folks know this little gem despite it serves one of the best western variety in Bayan Lepas neighborhood. I was first introduced by G, when we discussed about western food in Penang. To be honest, western cuisine that is composed of fish & chips, chicken chop and grilled steak option is not my cup of tea. Personally, I perceived western dishes of this variety required minimal expertise when it comes to culinary art. You may call me naive, but there was once I told a friend that the only different in western serving is the sauce, whether you name it mushroom sauce, garlic sauce, oriental sauce or teriyaki sauce. Grilling or deep frying, I don’t need much skill to do that. In fact, today we have the luxury of deep fryer and state-of-art oven or machine to prepare that. Opsh! Perhaps I was too soon to pass a judgment.
Until I found Gathers In Restaurant that tucked away in a commercial row at Sunway Prima, adjacent to Bayan Lepas FIZ Phase 2. If you’re familiar with the main road from Bayan Baru heading to Penang International Airport, Sunway Prima is the commercial zone where EST Hotel is located. Gathers In is not visible from main road however if you could locate EST Budget Hotel, Gathers In is just a few steps away.
If you were to follow my post, I had just invested in a new toy called bread maker machine! And, it brings us lots of joy to my family – we have our daily supply and we do not longer eat the commercial sandwich loaf on the supermarket aisle! In addition, we love the aroma of freshly baked bread that fill up our little cottage in the morning! It is just magically comforting, pleasant and makes one’s mouth to water. Do you know that researchers found the smell of baked bread makes people happier and kinder to stranger? Strange?
Let me tell the story from our castle. For the past 2 weeks, our breakfast is freshly baked loaf. Thanks to the generic bread maker machine, we have a few variety from plain to wholemeal loaf, mixed fruits loaf, fruits and nuts loaf, and even peanut butter loaf. The last one certainly makes one salivating once the aroma is in the air!
