A humorous encounter while traveling along Great Ocean Road, VIC
In autumn some years back, my significant other was relocated to Melbourne for a short assignment and I tagged along. Being a full time home maker there, I did not have much to do except cooking, shopping, cleaning and reading. Nevertheless, I took up a new position in our household by becoming the weekend trip organizer.
That weekend, we decided to travel along the Great Ocean Road; the most popular nature destination in Victoria. On the Saturday morning, we departed from our place in Forest Hill heading to Geelong. The journey was pleasant and we made several stops at various places including Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay and 12 Apostles. When we finally completed viewing Loch Ard Gorge, our last view point along Great Ocean Road, it was already dusk. The sky was getting darker and we soon needed to find a place to rest. As we hadn’t booked any accommodation, we decided to sleep in our car that night (since it was a large car and we thought it would be comfortable).
After dinner, we were tired and feel asleep in the car parked in front of McDonald’where we had our meal. All of a sudden, I saw a bright light shining through my mist covered window. Squinting through the window, I could see a pair of bright car head lights. A figure was walking towards us. When he reached our window, he knocked on it and shone a flash light into the car. I heard a gruff voice, “Hey.. how is it going?”. Oh my God, it is the police. Were we in trouble? Perhaps it was not legal to sleep by the road side. Vision of a night in the lock-up came to my mind. As I was thinking of what to say, he promptly walked back to his patrol car and drove away. We were saved.
The next day, we found out that town we slept had the highest crime rate in that area. Oh my God!
