Growing up in Penang, we regard 'Wan Tan Mee' or dried egg noodle as one of our staple food. In the good old days, it is known as 'Tok Tok Mee'. My mom told me during her younger days the Wan Tan Mee sellers used to knock on their stall as a means to market this noodle and the sound created was 'Tok Tok'. And the kids called them 'Tok Tok Mee' and some stick to it until today!
Nowadays, it more popular known as Wan Tan Mee and available in almost at every Chinese coffee shop in Penang whether it is early in the morning for breakfast, noon for lunch or at night for dinner/supper. The taste of Wan Tan Mee is more universally accepted, being neither too spice inclined nor involving extreme cooking style compare to other Penangites' staple food like 'Hokkien Mee' or 'Char Kuey Teow'. Having this special feature, it is the safer and healthier (comparatively) take away for everybody including young children and elderly as well.
In Penang, Wan Tan Mee is usually served dried in black soy sauce or in plain soup, garnish with roasted lean pork, leafy vegetables (cai-xin) and a couple of wantan. The original Wantan or Wonton originated from Hong Kong is a piece of dough wrapped with minced shrimps. The Penang wantan version somehow contains minced pork instead.
Being married to someone who love Wan Tan Mee, most of our weekend breakfast is Wan Tan Mee. Over the years, we had tasted from the worse and the good ones! And last weekend, I had to agree with AC that the Famous Wan Tan Mee at Swee Kong Coffee Shop serves the best Wan Tan Mee that I have tasted so far in Penang.
Located exactly opposite Pulau Tikus Police Station at the junction where Moulmien Close (Solok Moulmien) meet Burma Road (Jalan Burma), the strategic Swee Kong Coffee Shop is usually packed drawing the crowd from the patrons of Pulau Tikus fresh market.
Famous Wan Tan Mee stall is one of the busiest stalls operating here in the morning. Its Wan Tan Mee is distinctively special compares to others as it is served with thick egg gravy. A plate costs us RM3.80. And it is garnished with six pieces of fried pork minced wantan, roasted lean pork, black mushroom, green leafy vegetable (cai-xin) and pickled green chili. The appearance of the first plate that landed on our table already earned a plus mark and made a good reason for us to add two more plates!
I couldn't resist but to also try. The soft texture noodle appeared slightly wider compared to usual ones and the aroma was just nice, perfectly blended with the thick egg gravy. Superb and delicious! If Wan Tan Mee is your favorite staple food like My Significant Other, Famous Wan Tan Mee stall at Swee Kong Coffee Shop is a must go place. Try it and you will never regret!
