I was once dreamed of owning a florist, as I love flowers and cute teddys. When I learned about floral arrangement class in Penang, I was pretty excited and looking forward to achieve another milestone in my personal goal. In this write-up, I will elaborate my first lesson. I will share as much as I have learned as part of recording for my own and at the same time, sharing the experience of exploring a new interest with you. It is fun!

In the first lesson, we learned how to make 'Round Centerpiece' Floral Arrangement.

Display position: Center of a round table
Design Concept:
Side view of complete arrangement is a triangle cone Side View

Top view of complete arrangement is a circle with 5 primary flowers (in this picture, primary flower is pink rose) at base level resembled a star shape while  3 primary flowers at second level make a shape of a triangle. Top View

Fundamental:
1. Main or primary flower that attracts attention. Common example: Rose, Carnation. Carnation is usually chosen as it can last longer. Quantity suggested: 9 stalks
2. Supporting or secondary flower uses to match the primary flower and add some variety. Common example: Chrysanthemum, Purple Peacock
3. Fillers that are use at the last step to close any area that sponge or container are still visible. Commonly use to surround equally among all the flowers and leaves. Common example: White peacock, Yellow peacock.
4. Leaves or greens. This is used at the beginning as base to create the natural or soothing atmosphere. Common example: Fern leaf, Japanese Bamboo.

Additional tips:
Color - Color combination must be matching or contrast yet the colors are harmony among them to sustain the western style/environment and avoid any disconnection.
To be safe, always have at least one white color among the flowers/fillers.
Size - Depth or Height of primary flowers will determine the size of the bouquet. If bigger bouquet is intended, place the structural flower taller.
Balance - Nice floral arrangement provides balance natural mood. Always rotate while arranging and view from all angles to ensure the arrangement is soothing to our eyes.

Getting started:
1. Equipped with water soaked round container, start with putting a piece of fern in the middle of the container, pointing top or perpendicular to the sponge surface.
2. Then, place the second piece of fern at 90 degree or more from the first fern to create an 'L' angle. The ferns placed at base level are usually about 2 inches above the bottom of the container or the level where the sponge starts. Refer to Picture 1.
Picture 1
3. Then, move to place the next fern at based level to create more 'L' surrounding the container. Ideally place an odd numbers of 'L' for instance 5 based ferns resembled shape of a star as shown on Picture 2.
Picture 2
4. Then, move up and start placing second level of ferns to form a triangle shape that sits above the star shape. Arrange the rest of the ferns circulating the container until the sponge is almost 30-50% covered.
5. Then, place the primary flower. Start to place the structural stalk (structural flower is the tallest flower) again in the middle point, with bud pointing to sky. Usually the smallest bud is selected to match with natural environment.
6. Same principle is applied as on Picture 3; place the second stalk to form an 'L' shape at 90 degree or more. Ensure the primary flower at base level is positioned in-between the ferns to create harmony. Also, maintain the star shape at the base level on Picture 4.

Picture 4
Some leaves from primary flowers can be kept and composed together.
7. Then, move on the second level of primary flowers to form triangle shape as shown on Picture 5.
Picture 5
8. Next, move to arrange the secondary flowers (in this class, it is purple peacock) in-between the primary flowers as on Picture 6.
Picture 6
Place in circular arrangement to ensure smooth motion. The bulky secondary flowers example purple peacock can be placed at based layer in order to create smooth view.
9. Once all the secondary flowers filled up equally and blend nicely among the rest, arrange the fillers to fill the gap among all the foliage in a balance mood and mode.
10. Hooray! The first floral arrangement is successful! It is indeed great to achieve another milestone in life.

Hi cecelia! Most of reputable florists in Penang do offer floral arrangement classes at various level. However, some of the courses (of 10 lessons/class) may reach more than RM1K (which I am a bit hesitant to invest smilies/smiley.gif). I am also searching for an intermediate class with lower budget. In case I happen to come across one, will definitely share here.

Anna,

In Penang, the cup oasis can be purchased from Heng Long, slightly opposite Penang Times Square. Check out here for address, telephone and click on the map on the article > http://www.mywisewife.com/fres...enang.html

Hope this helps.
