Like you I had plenty of doubts at the beginning to understand about global warming, environmentalism and those big words published on news headlines. Is 'Global Warming' merely a myth or another political agenda? Aren't sure what to begin with but I remember my teacher said 'Asking questions is the best way to learn'.

Doubts is the beginning not the end of wisdom ~ George Iles

  • What is Global Warming? It refers to an increase of average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans.
  • Why global warming happen? Referring to scientific consensus, it is caused by the increase of atmospheric green houses gases includes carbon dioxide (CO2).
  • When did it happen? A significant change was reported in our climate since mid-twentieth century
  • Who contributed to global warming? Creatures on earth called man (this includes woman too, so that not being sexiest)
  • Where does Global Warming happen? On our beloved planet called Earth
  • How does it happen? Mainly owing to industrialization and increased of carbon foot prints (or CO2 emission).

Global warming started with us and it only can be stopped or prevented by us. It is OUR environment, it is OUR responsibility to reduce our carbon foot prints. If you are doing more and I am doing less, it will average out to be zero. Only if you and I are doing it together, we will have the positive impact and our planet will have a future.

What we can do as a person?
1. Be creative and innovative and start our action with reduce, reuse and recycle. Recycle

  • For instance, reduce the junk to dump by reusing the old stuff as long as it is still working instead of always buying brand new one. Shop for the necessary/functionality rather for the luxury. The old clothes can be recycled with some spark of creativity to mix and match.
  • Reuse hanky/napkin instead of tissue paper
  • Reduce hard copy newspaper/magazine by reading/subscribing e-book/online articles.
  • Reduce energy wasted by buying energy efficient home appliances.
  • Reduce meat/steak consumption. Perhaps become a vegetarianSmile.
  • Recycle the aluminum cans, glass bottles etc.

2. Read diligently, think rationally and verify the facts. Then, understand the tips and make them as our habits.

  • Plenty of green tips available online, reading will keep us abreast with some new tips that will save our environment and our pocket. For example, use compact fluorescent energy saving lights (CFL) instead of incandescent light bulbs. An 11-watt CFL produces the same light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb at 20% of the energy cost and last 6 times longer.
  • Go to basic like planting our own food. Plant some vegetables at backyard may help our muscles to tone up as well as keeping our wok with fresh vegetables to fry. Exercise and save on food, aren't we kill two birds with one stone? Indirectly, we help to reduce the usage of pesticide as we do not need to buy the vegetables from commercial market. We also reduce the CO2 emission on transportation.

What we can contribute in society?
1. Support and participate in the 'green' activities around usIdeas

  • Paying bill online instead of driving to the respective counters. Ask for e-billing for record instead of hard copy sent via snail mail.
  • Car pooling or stay close to work place/work from home. Consider using the conservative means like cycling to work place or shopping at nearby vicinity.
  • Support regulations to reduce carbon prints e.g. tax based on garbage produced.
  • Bring our own bag for groceries shopping and say no to plastic groceries bag.

2. Encourage the folks around us to do the same.
In event the whereby we can lend tools to our neighbor, do so to instill good habit of 'reducing' the junks. Motivate our friends that bring their own cutlery instead of using the disposable ones.

As I read more about global warming, there are also plenty write-up on its myths or political threat. Personally I feel there is nothing to loose if we were to practise the good habits to save our earth. There are so much more we earn in return. Definitely being a wiser human as we read more. Absolutely, be a healthier person when we use our muscles and brains often than burning the gas. Be a happy person (in extensive network) as we share our life and share our tools. Last but not least, potentially we can achieve a fabulous financial state when we consume less, spend less, think more and lead a simple life on a tiny yet tidy space on earth.

Then, what are we waiting for, let us start now!

If you take care of the small things, the big things take care of themselves. You can gain more control over your life by paying closer attention to the little things ~ Emily Elizabeth Dickinson
