Chinese New Year is just around the corner. This year, it falls on 25 January 2009. If you pass by most houses, there is always a smell of freshly baked cookies in the air. Over the years, I was never into the baking mood, but somehow this year I did try a couple of cookies at home. Perhaps it is time to pick up a new skill!
This week, I tried to bake Green Pea Biscuits or Cookies. Green Pea cookies seem like the top new comer in the list of popular biscuits in town for the coming Chinese New Year or Spring Festival celebrated in Malaysia. In Penang, you may see Green Pea Biscuit sits on the same shelves together with other must-have biscuits like ‘Kuih Kapit (Love Letter Biscuits)’, ‘Kuih Bangkit’ (Peranakan's signature cookies), Almond Cookies, Peanut Cookies, Pineapple Tarts and Mini Spring Rolls.

I learned about Green Pea Cookies when I visited Auntie Rose shop at Bayan Baru Market in Penang. To get started, I bought a set of pre-mixed ingredients from Auntie Rose.
Ingredients: 600 gram of pre-mixed flour (I suspect the combination at least comprised plain flour + icing sugar + salt + grounded green peas) 200 gram of groundnut oil Tools/Utensils: Convection oven A huge bowl - to mix the ingredients Baking trays
Getting started: 1. Get a huge bowl and pour out the pre-mixed flour. Stir the pre-mixed ingredients to get them evenly distributed.
 2. Make a crater in the middle and pour in the groundnut oil slowly. 3. Mix them well until all the ingredients get the oil or a dough is formed like shown below.
 4. Roll the dough long and pinch them into pieces in the size of ten-cent coin.
 5. Place them on your palm and use the other palm to roll it round like making the glutinous rice balls (‘tang yuan’). 6. Place the rolled round balls on the baking tray. 7. Put into oven and bake for 15 minutes (Suggestion: Pre-heat the oven for 5 minutes at the temperature of 150 degree Celcius).
If longer time is required for optimum baking or preference, play around with duration or temperature accordingly.
 8. Cool the cookies completely before storing into air-tight containers.
These Green Pea Cookies taste good and blend well with the baked green peas. It is also soft and almost melt in my mouth. Sound very tempting, right? Get a ready-made pre-mixed and try it yourself. Alternatively, if you wish to be more adventurous and explore on the ingredients, the recipe by Aunty Yochana is a good reference to start with. Happy baking!
