Big Apple Donuts & Coffee made the first debut in Penang during the opening of Jusco Bandar Perda or AEON Seberang Perai City mall, Bukit Mertajam on 22 August 2008. I was there on the first weekend to try Big Apple as the tag line says 'Every Piece is a Masterpiece' but alas, getting to this mall was a real head-ache. Roads in Bandar Perda on the weekend used to be easy to travel, surprisingly these roads seemed to be a perpetual car park. We parked our car rather far, possibly more than 500 m away from the entrance of the mall. Sweats! Our initial plan got to scrap after seeing a hundred meter long queue at Big Apple which could possibly starve us to death. Looking for other alternatives were equally disappointing as the crowd at every food corners were as if there were free food served. Even all the tables in Arena food court were taken up and people were still waiting for those seated to finish their food. Holy cow! That was the first and last experience of mine until yesterday, we decided to give another try.

It was completely a different picture. The journey was smooth and we managed to get an indoor car park in less than 5 minutes. So this time, we headed straight to Big Apple Donuts & Coffee. Being only second in the queue and still contemplating on our choices, it was already our turn to pick the selection.

A well thought designed for its logo and image. Big Apple is the nick name of New York City. The most famous landmark - Empire State Building (the original one is rather squarish though!) explains itself here creating an image of cosmopolitan life-style. Contemporary branding strategy I guess!
We opted for 6 pieces box with 6 different flavors that we fancied. They were 'The Alien', 'Say Cheese','Go Nutz', 'Kimochi', 'Mango Tango' and 'Californian Almond'.

The texture of these donuts were soft and just nice in my mouth. Some folks may prefer the donut with tougher dough. Among all these, my favourite is Californian Almond (exactly what you'd guess, it is at the top row, first from left in the picture below). Almond flakes sprinkled on white chocolate is simply lovely! 'The Alien' in the middle on of the top row in the above picture, is a good choice for dark chocalate lover, riched and creamy perfect matched with the dough.
Nut lovers among us were getting nuts over 'Go Nutz' (first on the left of bottom row) and 'Kimochi' (first right on the bottom row). Ideal for them!
Top with shredded white chocolate and cheese, the first right on top row or 'Say Cheese' was thought to offer more cheese but in fact, it was not. It was just OK. 'Mango Tango' (middle of bottom row) somehow is below our expectation, not to our liking. We were trying to figure out which part was actually closer to mango. Was it the cream on the centre or the surround topping? Erh..no conclusion though. The laidback environment of contemporary design looks comfortable. WIFI service is made availble to enjoy net surfing while snacking donuts and sipping your favorite coffee.
