If you’d heard of Tangga Kenari 1000 Tahun (literally means 1000 Year Canary’s Staircase), it is actually the trail of 1334 steps that leads you to the summit of Mount Jerai or Gunung Jerai. Yes, you’d read it right. After merely a thousand odds steps of stairway, it means you’d conquered an altitude of 4793m and guarantee you to be on the top of the world!
Exactly, Tangga Kenari Seribu Tahun is a must-try for fitness enthusiasts as it is the longest man-made staircase that was ever built in the forest without endangered the lives of flora. Aim to promote nature tourism, this trail has been used extensively as the training ground for jungle trekking by youth and teens activists.
Located 33km from Sungai Petani, Titi Hayun Recreational Forest got its name from the suspension bridge that run across a small river that is also the artery of this recreational forest. Home to cascading waterfalls, over a century old trees such as Ara, Hutan Lipur Titi Hayun also offers chalets, dipping pool, children playground, resting huts, food stalls and bathrooms/toilets.
An interesting spot not far from the suspension bridge is Puteri Mandi Waterfalls, at which can be reached after trekking over 3 km. Though the distance sounds short, go prepared as the journey is indeed a path less traveled, hence expect thick roots covering the ground, befriending blood suckers – I mean leeches, challenging terrain with unclear trail, however the majestic view of Puteri Mandi waterfalls is truly fascinating and rewarding. Read more the trail and what to expect here.
A word of advice, avoid visiting during dry spell as the water is still, static, not flowing hence compromising hygiene in case you or your children think of taking a dip!
If you’re planning to get there from North-South Highway, exit at Gurun. Cruise on country road heading to Guar Chempedak. The flat paddy field stretch against the background of majestic Mount Jerai is the best captured after Guar Chempedak town, around Teroi and Titi Serong along the way to Yan Kechil, with chalets and homestay providers dotting the track.
Not enough of Titi Hayun, then hit the road and head north, towards Yan Kechil and look for Seri Perigi Waterfalls. It is a hidden recreational park that is just a few kilometers away that is worth exploring since you’re already there, so feel free make another territory on the district of Yan in Kedah!
