I was ecstatic when I learned that Korean break dancers were coming to town! From little information I gathered about them, I was confidence that I would be enjoying this hilarious, comical and dynamic story and dances starring five prison breakers! Some interesting facts about break dancing. It started in 1970s near New York City on the streets and popular among youth, break dance evolved from hip-hop movement which incorporated with electro or hip-hop music. Usually the dancing style requires powerful and extremely flexible move with strong physical body, at times combined with freezing and graceful dancing technique. Making the first debut in Penang (Malaysia), we went for the first premier show at Dewan Pinang in George Town to watch an internationally-acclaimed extreme dance - BREAK OUT!!! Also in the house with us on the same night was Penang Chief Minister Mr Lim Guan Eng. The story of five jail birds started with their routine life in prison until one day, they found a mysterious book and their destiny changed. These convicts took a daring path, planning for their escape with fancy idea to synchronize the rumbling thunder with excavating work into a hallow passage. Check out the video clip below.
Personally, I regard the stage of tunnel crawling escape as Break Out iconic scene. I simply couldn't lift my eyes off them when these desperate prisoners' body suddenly turned into puppets dressed in same stripy uniform somehow with human heads on! Truly beyond my imagination!
After fleeing from prison, these jail birds sheltered at hospital and convent while the invisible search team came with chopper and SWAT team to trace them.
Break Out is a brilliant piece of work. Being a non-verbal stage show backed by beat-boxing music, Break Dance is very well choreographed of flawless team work with full use of stage, engagement with audience, lighting and sound effect. It definitely has stolen a place in my heart!
