Krian is one of the 8 districts that made up Perak state in Peninsular Malaysia. Constituted only about 4.6% of the total area in Perak but Krian is certainly 'big' enough to offer homes for several bird species including some exotic feathered creatures. Located 80 km south of Penang or 50 km west of Taiping, Kuala Gula is located along the coastline of Perak and covers almost 8200 hectres of mangrove swamps that has turned into sanctuary for birds.
Boating and Bird Watching at Kuala Gula
The natural habitat here attracts more than a hundred of bird species especially during the migratory season between September to January. The foreign species may fly from as as far as Siberia, China, Mongolia , Kazakhstan and Japan. This is also the best time to come to Kuala Gula for bird watching. More more 40 odds foreign species are spotted during migratory season as this hotspot offers excellent natural feeding and nesting ground. TheĀ  mudflat ecosystem is rich with minute organisms (high protein), crustaceans, molluscs and planktons which provides nutrients and vast amount of energy for these birds to continue their journey to the southern hemisphere.

PERHILITAN or Departments of Wild Life and National Parks was established since 1970 in Kuala Gula to protect and conserve both migratory and resident birds. Among more than 100 species that made Kuala Gula hot spot as their home, one of the most vulnerable species is milky stork.
The vulnerable Painted Stork (corrected from Milky Stork)
Forming part of Matang Mangroves Forest Reserve, Kuala Gula consists of vast stretches of mangrove swamps whereby
Bakau trees (Rhizophora spp.) and inland weeds such as mangrove ferns (Acrostichum spp.) could be found. Api-api
trees (Avicennia spp.) are also successively establishing themselves here. It is a huge wetland for nature enthusiasts to explore!
Enticing
Besides being a haven for birds, Kuala Gula is also the residence to other creatures like smooth otter, dusky leaf monkey and long-tailed macaque.

If you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of ridge-back dolphin during your boating trip. After sunset, fireflies would be glittering along the road side and 'light up' to bid you farewell!
The jetty along Gula River
Kuala Gula is indeed full of wonders!

would like to amend one of the picture ' the vulnerable Milky Stork'..: it is a 'Paited stork which always been mis-identified as Milky stork', can be diffential by the painted color on the wing..Nowadays, there are alot of hybrid between this both species which happen in most of the breeding programme in zoo, this make it even harder to distinguish between two.

thank you.
