The second night of our Yunnan trip was spent at Stone Forest Hotel, located in Shilin County - about 85 km southeast of Kunming. On the next day morning, we embarked in expedition to Stone Forest.

Just like most tourist spots in China, we had to arrive as early as possible to beat hoards of tourist. Stone Forest is one of China's 66 5A rating tourist spots, making it a must-to-visit-place when you are in Kunming. Its original name was 'Black Forest', but in 2001 the name changed to 'Stone Forest' after being recognized as one of amazing geographical site. In 2007, it made itself in the UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Researches have proven that about 20 million years ago, this place used to be a large ocean. When the ocean subsided, there were tonnes of creatures buried underneath and became solid as years passed by. Earth struck causes some of the earth formation to rise up and resulted in this wonderful karsts stone formation.
Among the most unique selling points about Stone Forest or fondly called as Shilin are:
- The entire area of Stone Forest is very large, approximately 350 kilometer squares, i.e. about half of the size of Singapore. To cover the whole area, it would take at least 4 days. Once, there was a Frenchman who used to stay here for 22 years and wrote an in-depth dictionary.
- Rocks in Shilin are formed naturally. There are lots of them, tallest ones being 50 meters. World's highest natural pinnacle is in Sarawak Mulu Cave of Borneo Island which reaches 77 meters.
- Rocks in Shilin are of various sizes and shapes. One will have to use your imagination to enjoy the scenery at Shilin.
We only visited a fraction of Stone Forest, so I hope my photos are able to paint some ideas about Stone Forest. Share your story here if you have visited this place!
