I was once searching high and low for a map of Kuala Gula and trying to study the best route to get there. There are 2 routes that can take you to Kuala Gula, depending on which direction you are coming from; whether from north or south of Peninsular Malaysia.

Since we are heading from north ex-Penang, we turned out at Jawi exit, then following the trunk road heading south (blue signboard route# 1) passing by Nibong Tebal, Parit Buntar and at Simpang Lima junction, take a right turn to Kuala Kurau. This stretch is no longer part of old north-south main road.

Once you are at Kuala Kurau town, just go along Jalan Pantai and heading to the vehicle concrete bridge (ask the local if you need to, they are a bunch of friendly folks!). Kuala Gula is situated about 13 km from Kuala Kurau.

As we traveled along this route after Kuala Kurau bridge, the signboard of Kuala Gula is clearly visible. Keep going straight and you will pass by palm oil plantation, one after another. Until when you reach a T-junction, Kuala Gula signboard will point you to take a right turn and this route will lead you to Kuala Gula town.

Again we passed by palm oil plantation, then a signboard to a Chinese temple - Hua Seng Keng.

Then in less than 5 minutes drive, on our left was a modern looking government clinic and further up, a school. Slightly opposite the Chinese primary school is a row of shop houses. The corner lot is a decent Chinese restaurant, serving the popular dish of fried rice sticks with crabs (crab fried bee hoon).

Below is a sketch of Kuala Gula town map for you to get around. Follow the red arrow to reach Kuala Gula as this is a proper sealed road (tarred road). Unlike the route circulating near Hua Seng Keng temple, it is an estate road with some parts are unsealed.

Behind the Chinese primary school (SJK Yuk Hwa), there is the Kuala Gula fishing village. Built up from clusters of stilt houses by the river bank, it is occupied by Chinese community in majority along the stretch of 5, 6 and 7 referring to above sketch. To be adventurous, just take a walk and chat with the locals. Their livelihoods mainly evolve as fisherman and marine related fields like cockle farming, aquaculture, dried shrimp and shrimp paste (belacan) industries.

Going back to the second route, if you are coming from south (e.g. from Ipoh/KL), you may exit the North-South Highway (E1) exit at Taiping Utara (Exit 148) and look for direction heading north. This section onwards is part of the old trunk road (Blue signboard, route# 1). After a short drive, you may reach Taman Seri Selinsing. Keep going north until Taman Seri Semanggol and take a left turn into Jalan Gula (A100). From this point to junction to Kuala Gula, it is roughly 20 km. You will pass by a secondary school (Sek Men Keb Mudzaffar Shah), a mosque and a primary school (Sek Keb Seri Pinang) and then followed by relatively a long stretch before reaching a T-junction with signboard to Kuala Gula. Take a left turn into A196 and it will head to Kuala Gula. I found this route from Google Map and hypothetically it should work. I have never tried this route but there is always first time for everything! If you had made it before, share your experience with us here!

Thanks maggie. Kuala Gula and Kual Sepetang (or formerly known as Port Weld) are located at 2 different districts in Perak. Kuala Gula sits in the Krian district while Kuala Sepetang belongs to Larut-Matang district. Kuala Sepetang is nearer to Taiping and accessible via road 74 from Simpang, Taiping. Nevertheless, they share similar nature of mangrove landscape and along the same coast of Perak. Both towns are visible on Google Map.
