Melamine Tainted Milk (Related) Products from China and Banned/Recalled Food List

Milk BanIt is very depressing to hear that human is taking advantage (making money) at the expenses of others' life. Where is our humanity and conscience? Sichuan's earthquake has awakened millions of people in the world that human is kind, compassionate and helpful! During the catastrophic, not only cash was pouring in including from the hands of street beggars, volunteers and missionary activists were also physically there to save as many human lives as possible in the shortest period.

Nevertheless, China Milk Scandal reported recently tainted with melamine extremely disappoint us. Where is our lesson learned when melamine were already reported in pet food imported from China in 2007? What happen to our ethic and integrity? Shall the life of these infants be penalized and at stake due to your greed of achieving higher protein level in your products? This torture to the innocent ones is the cruelest crime to human race!

Melamine or its IUPAC name 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine, is an organic base with chemical formula C3H6N6. S
ince it is only slightly soluble in water, when it is illegally used in milk industry, melamine will be dissolved in formaldehyde (carcinogenic/cancer causing) or other organic solvents before mixing into the milk!

Melamine is sometimes illegally added to food products in order to increase the apparent protein content. Standard tests such as the Kjeldahl and Dumas tests estimate protein levels by measuring the nitrogen content, so they can be misled by adding nitrogen-rich compounds such as melamine.

Although melamine by itself is nontoxic in low doses, but when combined with cyanuric acid (at times, present in drinking water) it can cause fatal kidney stones/urinary problems. Below is some references of the melamine tainted food. All these references are received via email and I am consolidating for the sharing purpose. I urge all the food authorities to work with WHO to compile and share a complete list of banned food or recalled melamine tainted products to protect the life of innocent consumers.

To identify the save milk products including milk powder/beverages/milk added food listed by Malaysia Health Ministry (MOH), please refer to the Food Safety and Quality Division of MOH official website periodically.

Some simple tips:
1. Check the label of the milk products. They shall includes food that contained milk in smaller quantity as well like beverages, yogurt, cheese, soya milk or cookies.
2. If you have doubt of the products like cake, bread or candy, stop eating or buying them. Better be safe than sorry.
3. Read, check out and keep abreast with the latest news.
4. If possible, breast fed your baby.
5. Search for alternative protein or buy safe raw food e.g. tofu or meats and cook/eat at home.

All of us shall work together once again to boycott all the tainted and adulterated with melamine's products without compromise as our world does not have place for these criminals!

Someone should compile a total list of all unsafe products (like here, but more widely advertised). There is no complete list of unsafe products anywhere! This is a good start.

i hope that melamine products will continuosly be banned to all the countries so that there are no more people who will die or be poisoned by this toxics....
for me we should be more careful in buying our foods because we dont know whether it is good or bad to our health... so we should think twice before we buy these things... it might be contaminated with this melamine....

Hi Trisha, My suggestion is to check with the local food authority of your residing country as each country could be sourcing raw material from different location. If in US, please ring or check with FDA via:http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2008/NEW01895.html or main site: http://www.fda.gov/

And you can always come back here and share with others what you have found out.

Thanks for the list. I am wondering about 4 categories of milk-related food products. Can any one enlighten me on these?

1. 3-in-1 coffee and white coffee packets produced in Malaysia or other places in southeast asia.

Where do they import the creamer they use in these widely-available coffee products? Have there been a systematic check of their products for melanine, whether done in Malaysia or Singapore?

2. Coffee creamers produced in Thailand. Because of AFTA, packaged food products such as Nestle creamers in Malaysia are imported from Thailand. While creamers are non-dairy by nature, the contents include protein solids that can be contaminated by melamine. Has Nestle Thailand and other producers given any public assurance that their production in Thailand do not use any problematic Chinese-sourced materials?

3. Condensed milk produced in Thailand. It seems Thailand has emerged as a successful packaged food producers. Condensed sweetened milk is another widely used product. It's is reconstituted from milk powder and protein solid. The same question as item 2 above applies.

4. Fern Leaf milk powder produced outside of China. Fonterra (spelling?) is the owner of Fern Leaf milk powder which quality I like. Fonterra is also the partial foreign owner of the problematic Sanlu milk producer in China. But Fonterra is also the whistle blower (sort of) on China's melamine problem. I would tend to continue to trust Fern Leaf products if they are marked as "Product of New Zealand." But is this trust of mine misplaced?

But this press release by the Malaysian Ministry of Health left a lot of ambiguity in locally produced or imported creamer. It is in Malay language and the quality of the report left a lot to be desired.

http://fsq.moh.gov.my/uploads/kenyataan_akhbar_ke_12.pdf

It said Pizza Hut Taiwan's cheese packet was made of 2 ingredients: Cheese powder and creamer. The cheese powder imported from NZ was cleared (by whom?). The creamer supplied (but not made?) by a Malaysian firm was also supplied to many local 3-in-1 instant coffee and instant cereal makers, "and others." The creamer was also analyzed in Malaysia and CLEARED from contamination.

This is in contradiction with Taiwanese reports that the creamer appears to be the problem.

So what caused the conflicting report that the creamer is or is not contaminated?

I recently purchased Kellogg's Special K protein plus cereal. I have noticed that sometimes I feel nauseous after eating the cereal..
The first thing I did was try and determine if Kellogg's manufactures its cereals in China.. Yes, they have plants there.
I looked over the ingredients soy products etc... are listed, and a variety of simple to complex compounds.
I'm very concerned about all the products out there in the USA and elsewhere that may contain melamine but are normally not targeted. In otherwords the non-dairy products such as cereals etc... Special K does contain the gluten, etc... which I believe was partially to blame for the dog food disaster last year???
The Special K protein plus has 10 g of protein listed.
