As I walked into this restaurant, my sense was transported back to the good old time in 70s. I believe Tho Yuen has stood faithfully for at least more than two decades, judging from the facade and its interior. Tho Yuen is the second shop from the cross junction of Campbell Street and Cintra Street. Arriving about half past eight on Sunday morning, we grabbed a table for four inside. This restaurant was designed with an air well in the middle hall that allows the air circulating well and offer a cozy atmosphere. Its ceiling is relatively tall and with some fans around, Tho Yuen is a marvelous and authentic spot to 'yum cha' (drinking tea) or dim sum in Penang.

My friend said one of the best snacks of dim sum array offered at Tho Yuen is their hand made egg tart. It was once reviewed by Ho Chak - the local gastronomic guide TV series in Malaysia. In the shape of an oval, the thin pastry or crust is flaky crisp which made the base for the egg custard filling. Tho Yuen's egg tart tastes just nice, in fact not too sweet. Believe it or not, each of us finished up one egg tart on top of the other dim sum on our table. To avoid disappointment, come early and if possible before 9am. Were were indeed lucky to have the last four pieces to take home.

Besides its signature dish, Tho Yuen also offers several dozens other dim sum dishes. Some of the dishes we opted includes claypot porridge, Lo mai gaiĀ (steamed glutinous rice with chicken, mushroom and Chinese sausage), char siu bao (barbequed pork bun), turnip cake, taro cake and some prawn/meat dumplings. All these were picked from the trolley pushed around in the restaurant. I prefer this style over the self-service as it is definitely more authentic!

We also did not miss their Phoenix talons (fung zao) which is a dish made from chicken feet that been deep-fried, boiled, marinated in black bean sauce and then steamed. Most of the times, it is typically dark in color and accompanies with some black mushroom.
Being adventurous, all of us also tried a new dish which I did not get its name. My friend described the appearance to make the order. This dish is rather special in the sense that rice stick noodles (bee hoon) and bean sprouts are taken with steamed fish but they are being served separately. Although my tummy was almost full then, this unique dish was so tempting! No regrets, it was delicious!

We enjoyed our breakfast at Tho Yuen. It is also less crowded compares to some dim sum outlets nearby so you may take your sweet time there. And majority of the staff (in Tho Yuen uniform) are in golden years yet they are very friendly, humorous and helpful. They gestures are indeed very warm and welcoming!
One more interesting fact, Tho Yuen is also a hand-made moon cake bakery which I will review shortly. Stay tune!
