A famous icon of George Town Penang, Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower is recognizable from afar as it stands at 60 feet tall at King Edward Place (Pesara King Edward) next to Penang Port Commission.
The rising sun is peeping!
Built in 1897 by a Penang Chinese tycoon - Cheah Chen Eok to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign, he spent 35,000 Straits dollars to complete this clock tower in 1902. Sadly, Queen Victoria passed on by 22 January 1901 before the completion of this remarkable tower.
By the blue sky, it stands proud!
Of the Moorish style architecture, this clock tower posses four tiers with the base tier designed in an octagonal shape. The next two tiers comprise four distinct faces and decorated with windows, balconies and four working clocks. The top tier is rounded off with roman pillars and rooted with domed cupola.

On the base tier lining, it is stated 'This clock tower is presented to Penang by Cheah Chen Eok in commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee 1937-1897'.

When you visit this significant landmark, take a good look as this clock tower is slightly leaning at certain position. And count the step of the staircase heading up to the main door (it is 6 steps in total) which indicates the number of decades of Queen Victoria's reign.

Recently, a metal betel nut sculpture (called as 'buah pinang' in Malaysian Language) was erected right in the middle of the roundabout next the this iconic clock tower. Capturing a shot of both simply means 'The vintage meets The contemporary!'
