Chee Cheong Fun (猪肠粉) is a Cantonese slang for Rice Noodle Roll. In Mandarin, it is called zhū cháng fěn literally translated as pig intestine noodle owing to its appearance that looks like the small intestine of a pig.
As the name indicated, Chee Cheong Fun is a Cantonese dish originated from southern China and Hong Kong. The common Chee Cheong Fun served at dim sum restaurants are usually made from sheets of rice noodles and filled with shrimp, roasted pork (Char siew), chicken, fish or vegetables. A thin gravy of sweet soy sauce and a bit chili paste will go with it before serving.
For Penangites, they have a special version of Chee Cheong Fun which may be a little different. The fundamental ingredient of rice noodle sheet is still there without any filling. And the sauce that accompany it is thicker. In fact, they consist of 3 types of sauces; being sweet sauce, shrimp paste sauce (haeko) and chili sauces.

In Penang, Chee Cheong Fun is a common hawker food but not many places do serve nice Chee Cheong Fun. One of our favorite is Chee Cheong Fun at Genting Coffee Shop in Island Glades. The shrimp sauce (haeko) is fabulous! It is creamy and does not stink or produce 'fishy' smell. We suspect it is mixed with some fine peanut powder or peanut butter.
A small serving cost you RM1.70 and big serving will be RM2.50. Some folks prefer the 'un-open' rice noodle rolls and you may request it that way when you make the order. The business is good and their service is prompt.
I would say this is the best Chee Cheong Fun of Penang version! You have to try if you are in Pearl of The Orient.
Looking forward to try, check out how to get there.
