From the name 'Popiah' and its pronunciation, one can easily guess its origination. Sometimes also called as Fujian/Chaozhou-style Spring Roll,  Popiah or PohPiah is of southern China origin in Fujian province. In fact, Popiah in Hokkien dialect means 'thin wafer'. In China, Popiah is usually eaten in spring or during QingMing (Tomb Sweeping) festival when vegetables are growing in abundance. In Malaysia, Singapore or Taiwan, however Popiah is a popular snack or dish available during all year round.
Spotted the Popiah Stall?
Fresh spring roll or Popiah is a Chinese crepe that holds perfectly some cooked filling usually consists of stir-fried turnip, french beans, jicama, steamed bean sprouts, fresh lettuce leaves. Each crepe is prepared on a round thin white edible wrapper. After spreading some sweet sauce onto this thin wrapper, it will be added with fresh lettuce, following by filling and then being secured on both  ends and roll almost like a cylinder.

After Popiah migrated to South East Asia and landed in the states of Malacca Straits like Penang, Malacca and Singapore, it had turned out to be a local version with some additional Peranakan ingredients like shredded eggs, fried shallots, peanuts powder and shrimp paste/chili sauce spread on the thin wheat wrapper.

Depending on the vendors, if you are lucky sometimes you can even have it with minced pork, squibs or even crab meats!
The Popiah Stall at Padang Brown Food Court
Padang Brown Popiah
In Penang, Padang Brown Popiah is one of the places that offers with crab meats! Trust me, if you wish to try the Padang Seafood Popiah, make the order as soon as you arrive. Usually, the Padang Popiah has a long wait list especially on the weekends or public holidays.

What I like most about Padang's Popiah is its homely authentic taste. The filling of fresh spring roll is aromatic and simply nice after topping with steaming gravy. Perhaps owing to the spices, awesome mixture of ingredients used and well fried shallots!
It makes me drooling..
Come and try it yourself! Besides Popiah, this place also offers nice Yong Tau Fu, Pasembur and lovely Nyonya desserts (kuih).
