Personal Development - Life by Design

Enjoying LifeYou can take control of your fate! I believe that life is by design. No, I am not talking about the great Creator who created the great cosmos, laws of the universe and us humans. I am talking about our individual life, about our choices and decisions as we live and about how the outcomes of our lives are because of our previous actions and less because of fate or some random luck. Granted that there may be an earthquake tomorrow and you may die or be injured, or maybe the stock market may just crash overnight and wipe you out, but many things that happen tomorrow are the result of what you did today, yesterday or sometime way before. Your decisions lead you to where you are now, whether you are successful, rich and powerful or a beggar by the street.

Sometimes people tend to think that life just throws out these random scenarios that make it unpredictable - sometimes life just sucks and you can’t really do anything about it. Imagine that this morning, you woke up late and realized that you’re going to be late for work. Going down for breakfast you realize that you’re out of milk and had breakfast of only bread and water. Already irritated your youngest daughter decided to dirty her clothes during breakfast. You yelled at her and she cried. Hot and angry, you pulled her upstairs and changed her clothes, dammed; you’re going to be very, very late for work today. On top of that, the baby sitter turned up late and you had to waste more time waiting for her. Wondering what your boss will say when you get into the office two hours late for the morning meeting, you rush into your car and gunned the engine, but it won’t start. You cursed as you grabbed your briefcase and rushed out the streets to get a cab. When you finally got into the office, the meeting is almost over. The boss glared at you and asked you to present your report. You reached into your briefcase and realized with horror that it is not there! You must have left in on your study table and in the rush and chaos this morning, you’ve forgotten to pack it into your briefcase. Wondering if you’re going to still have a job by evening, you apologized in a small voice and sat down feeling hot, angry but small. This isn’t your fault, you say. Nothing is going right this morning. It is just real bad luck. And so you blame it on fate, God and the accursed universe which you must live in.

But, could you have played a part in the outcome this morning? Could your previous actions be the reason that this particular morning turned out bad as it was? The reason you don’t have milk in the morning is because you failed to check your stock the day before and so did not order it on time. If you’d made sure your daughter had her breakfast before changing into her day clothes, then she wouldn’t have dirtied it. Your baby-sitter did left a message on your machine that she’ll be late that morning. But since you decided not to check those messages yesterday night, thinking that they’re mostly sales calls and spam, you missed it. Your car had had morning startup problems before this, but you decided that it’s still tolerable and it’d be too troublesome to send it to your mechanic whose garage is across town. Noticed that most of the ‘fate’ is actually the result of your own prior decisions? Even fate it seemed, was the result of your own design.

Living by design is first by realizing that you are responsible for your life today. You make the choice and you call the shots. Decisions and choices have to be made each day in your life. Even if you decide not to make a decision, if you decide not to decide, the choice will still be made – but not by you, and the outcome later may not turn out to be what you’d prefer. Better you take the helm and actively steer your life don’t you think?
