I do agree with most Penang folks that most restaurants or food corners in Queensbay Mall are either too expensive or under par quality. Sometimes these restaurateurs also provide services below customers' expectation although we are paying through our nose. Having said that, all these places are still and always packed with people especially during the peak hours.
If you are looking for something reasonable in term of food quality and/or price near Queensbay, check out Max Gourmet Restaurant. It is located at a shop block opposite TGIF (Thank God It's Friday!). From Queensbay Mall, get to North Zone and exit from the extreme end glass door. Max Gourmet is slightly towards your left; across the main road.
It serves dim sum, Hong Kong style noodles and desserts. Pretty close to what are featured in Hongkie Restaurant or Wong Kok Restaurant but in my opinion, the taste is more localized at Max Gourmet compare to the former two.
Having a sister branch at Pekaka Square, it is called Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant over there. This place is equally popular among the locals and usually very crowded on the weekends. At Maxim, it is self-service dining with more variety on dim sum and desserts and less choices on Hong Kong style noodles compares to Max Gourmet outlet.
One of the most popular dish in their menu at Max is duck noodles but we did not try that dish this time. Instead we opted for porridge, fried carrot cake, dim sum, yam cake and steamed chicken with water crest.
This is my first time to try steamed chicken with water crest. The marinated chicken meat was smooth and tender. Laying beneath was water crest and serving together with wolfberry, its gravy was sweet and tasty!
I always love Max's porridge as it is well cooked with scallops and cubes of century egg. On the order list, you may opt to tick (indicating 'yes') or cross (to indicate 'no') some of these options: ginger, spring onion, pepper and oil.
The carrot cake at Maxim is fried with three big prawns, plenty of bean sprouts, some chive buds, pickled lettuces and eggs. And it turned out good and aromatic!
Desserts like yam fritters, Chinese dumplings (Pau), glutinous rice, egg tarts and almond balls are also among the popular pick here.
If you wish to try a bit of everything, go in a group more than a handful to enjoy!
