Recommended by a good friend of ours, we decided to try the Spice and Rice Restaurant on His Birthday!

Sandwiched between Light Street Convent and Green Hall Road, Spice and Rice Restaurant & Bar is in a British colonial building opposite Penang High Court. It is open for lunch and dinner. Parking lot is limited but there are plenty near the vicinity of Dewan Sri Pinang. That night, we made a convenience stroll from Dewan Sri Pinang heading for gastronomical adventure at Spice and Rice.

Greeted by a friendly waiter, we walked into the restaurant and chose a quiet corner. To begin, we ordered a mango and plain lassi each for drinks.

Move on to appetizer, we were recommended with Vegetable Cutlet. It came in a flat round shape (picture below) and was crisply fried to perfection. The flavor was just great blended with the stuffed potato cubes and mixed vegetables.

For main dish, we were recommended to try Fish in Coriander (Goa Style) which turned out to be the most fabulous dish. Both of us simply love it. Fish in Coriander of Goa Style appeared in thick yellow gravy; it was made of boneless fish, coriander leaves and chopped onion. The creamy gravy was superb to be eaten with either naan (flat bread) or white rice.

For the next from menu, we chose boneless chicken to be simmered in masala gravy with onion, tomato and capsicum. It is called Chicken Dopiaza that came in red thick gravy in a stainless steel pot.

For vegetable section, we picked Green Dhall Sambhar. It is a mixed vegetable comprised lentil, tomato, brinjal and carrot cooked in green dhall of Southern Indian style tasted good with rice.

Service is prompt. Clean fitting lighted with yellow down lights and sentimental English songs in the background adds a touch of romantic ambience.

This place is great for a tranquil evening dinner.
