If you are a frequent road user of Interstate Highway 35 from Austin to San Antonio, New Braunfels may sound very familiar to you. It was established in 1845 on Comal River by German settlers. Braunfels is a German word which means 'brown rock' and it is also the name of a city in Germany. Guess it is the place where the Germans found their 'new' home!

Situated about 30 miles north-east of San Antonio, New Braunfels is home to a fairly large German Texan community. According to Census recorded in 2000, the population of New Braunfels was 36,494 comprising 84% of whites. German influence in term of culture, tradition and language is still prominent for instance 'Wurstfest' which is held annually.

Early prosperity and economy of this city was driven by farming and ranching particularly. Both were very sucessful because of abundant water sourced from large springs. Same happen today, New Braunfels emerges as a tourist attraction mainly owing to the cold-spring from Comal and Guadaluape rivers that run through the city. Especially in summer, people from other cities/towns keep coming back for the adventures of river camping, tubing, rafting, canoeing or just floating along the clean sparkling Guadalupe River. Alternatively, head to Schlitterbahn Water Park located by the banks of Comal River for the water recreational.

I just can't wait for summer, dipping into the water of Comal/Guadaluape River!
