As I mentioned in my earlier installment, no matter how hard I pestered my Significant Other (SO), he was still not going to reveal 'the' place we were going to dine on our Anniversary night.
So last night was 'D' day and he drove steadily along Tanjung Bungah Road, and I was thinking we could be heading to Batu Ferringghi for dinner. Suddenly, he made a turn into Hillside area, and my suspicion was Ingolf - The German Restaurant. Yeah, it must be Ingolf! Only the moment he switched off the car engine, then he said "Darling, this is the one - a Bulgarian restaurant". Thanks to CK Lam on her review of the first Bulgarian Restaurant in Penang, and that's how my SO found out about this place.
A fair Caucasian lady approached us at the entrance and offered to help us to get seated. "Table for two", that's what we replied and she led us to the mezzanine floor mostly occupied by smaller crowd for a romantic evening dining. There was a bar counter and some tables on the upstairs as well. Such a great set-up to elaborate more space in a standard-sized shop!
The corner we seated was cozy and dimly lighted up. Large stones were stacked up as wall resembling European cottage decorated with wooden window frame. A candle and a pot of chrysanthemums were placed nicely on each table matched with checked table cloth. Great choice made by my SO - I love this place! With a European couple occupied the table behind us, it even enhanced the ambiance like what my SO said "I bring Europe to you tonight instead! "
Having not much idea about Bulgarian cuisine, we tried out Chicken Spindle and Steak Bulgarian as main course with a Margarita and a glass of Red wine. Sweet Pumpkin was reserved as our desserts.
Margarita was served chilled with pinches of salts along the rim of the cocktail glass (see above) giving a sweet and salty alcoholics taste - lovely!
Below is the serving of Steak Bulgarian. It is a grilled chicken with creamy mushroom sauce garnished with potato, baby carrots, cherry tomato, cauliflower and brocolli.
Rolled alternating cheese and chicken, dipped with batter and deep fried, Chicken Spindle was delicious. The dessert of Sweet Pumpkin was served chilled. The texture was soft with eggs filled in-between the cubes of sweet pumpkin toppled with some honey (I guess) almost melted in my mouth.
We love the food and definitely will make more visits with friends or relatives along .
