We humans tend to take a short-term view of things. Perhaps our limited lifespan on earth has something to do with that. Why plan for long-term if we may not live long enough to enjoy the outcome. This short-term mindset is the cause of most of the problems that we have today. The need for immediate gains and fast success leads to the majority of the global problems like environmental pollution and the mess we have today in the world's economy. Everyone wants to reap material gains and they want it now. Let someone else worry about the consequences and the by-products. Humans are greedy and impatient by nature and so naturally won't look too far ahead if the gains are close at hand. But greedy and impatient are also choices that we make. We decide to be greedy, impatient and plan only for short-term gains. We decide to take the path of least resistance, because it is easier. But it is our choice, our decision in the end - our own design.
If you agree that we have the power to take the helm of our own life, to take responsibility and make decisions today that leads to the outcome that we want tomorrow, next week or a couple of years ahead, then you will also agree that we can design our life to be the way that we want it to be. We cannot change much of the environment that we are in, but we can move ourselves to another environment, or we can change ourselves to life harmoniously and happily with our current environment. Environment in this sense includes the place that you live in and also the people and culture that surrounds you.
The continuous process of designing ourselves and our life to be better than it was before is personal development. It is also important that in the process of becoming better, we do not make our environment and the people around us worse. In the process of developing our life to be a better person, we should be contributing to the society and the people close to us should be better of from our change. We consciously choose and design the 'developments' that we want to have in our character and life so that we and the people around us can be better of because of it. If you are a hot tempered person and you decide that one of your development agenda is to be more patient, then this is good for you because of various mental and physical health benefits. This is also good for the people around you because they will find you more tolerable and a better company. However, should your development agenda is that you want to be rich in terms of material gains, but in the process the people that you work with had to loose and become worse of, perhaps because of your underhanded tactics and back-stabbing, then this is not a positive development - even for yourself. A well designed path in life does not leave a trail of enemies behind!
Be conscious of every decision that you make in your life. Stop and give the choices that you have a thought before making the commitment, because now you know that what you decide now will have some impact on your life tomorrow. Be conscious of your emotions. Know when you're angry, irritated, excited, happy or sad. A huge part of personal development and life by design is to have an awareness of your state of mind as you make decisions for your life and others. If you know that you don't make good judgment now because you're too excited, then perhaps you need to postpone this decision for later when you're calmer. Or maybe you want to put in your personal development agenda to learn control your excitement. But all this requires you to go about life with full awareness of yourself and the surroundings around you. I am not saying that this is easy. This takes practice. You may need to start with little things in your life. If you're a impulsive shopper, then maybe the next time you reach for something in the shopping aisle, make a conscious effort to pause and think - do I really need this now?
Personal development is living your life by consciously designing your life. I believe that it is the conscious commitment to arrange and re-arrange your thoughts and emotions, your habits, goals and dreams and be aware of the power and impact of your decision on yourself, others and the environment. Be aware that what you decide to do at this moment has the power to change your future. The emotions that you decide to unleash have an impact on your relationship and other's perception of you tomorrow. Personal development is the conscious effort to always put some thoughts before the act and the development of yourself to be in control of your emotions, habits and your destiny.
Each of us needs to develop to be better - both for ourselves and the community that we live in. We need to take responsibility for our own life and our actions as well as enjoy the gains or face consequences of those actions. Personal development is the knowledge that you have the power to live your life as designed by you.
